Biography

Karla was born in 1889 in Chicago.

In 1915, Karla took over her father's failing business, the Great Lakes Paint & Varnish Co. She rose to become president.

In 1951, Karla retired.

In about 1955, Karla married widowed Dr. John Jack, probably in Chicago.

In 1956, Karla took over the business again and then sold in 1960.

In 1963, John passed away. In 1978, Karla passed away.

Karla Howe Jack

Karla Howe Jack, 88, former president of the Great Lakes Paint & Varnish Co. and one of the first women to head a business in Chicago, died Thursday in an Elmhurst nursing home. Mrs. Jack ran the company for 36 years before retiring in 1951. She went back to work in 1956 and worked until 1960, when she sold the company. During a 1949 interview, Mrs. Jack told a reporter she first began working out of necessity when her father's business and health failed almost at the same time. She went to work for the varnish company and then rose to president. Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Theresa Catholic Church, 467 W. Benton PI., Palatine. She Is survived by two cousins.
