Biography

Robert Howden was born on 5 October 1872 in Spott, Haddingtonshire, Scotland, United Kingdom. His parents were Robert Howden (~1850 - ~1929) and Barbara (Allan) Howden (~1848 - ).^[1]

In the 1881 Scotland Census Robert is said to be aged 8 years and is living with his parents and siblings at Birnieknowes, Oldhamstocks, East Lothian.^[2]

In the 1891 Scotland Census Robert is said to be 18 years old and employed as an Agricultural Labourer. He resides with his parents and siblings at Butterdean Farm Cottage, Oldhamstocks, East Lothian.^[3]

Robert married Isobel Bald (1866 - ) on 10 August 1894 in Skateraw, East Lothian, Scotland. It should be noted that Isobel is named as Isabella on the marriage certificate and the marriage is Registered at Innerwick, although held in Skateraw.^[4]

In the 1901 Scotland Census, Robert is now said to be 28 years old. The transcription on Ancestry states he was employed as a "Cousbuble" however I am wondering if this should actually say "Constable" without viewing the actual image its hard to tell. He resides at 141 Dundee Street, Edinburgh with his wife and son. They also have a lodger George Bald who is presumably a relation of Isobel.^[5]

Their son was Robert Howden (1894 - 1950).
