Biography

Margaret Eliza Howden was born to John Howden and Mary Howden.

She married James Stewart Rodgers in 1862 In New South Wales. [1]

Together they became the parents of Alice Roberta (Rodgers) Spence, John Robert Rodgers, James Ewing Rodgers, William Porteous Rodgers, Robert Howden Rodgers, Mary Porteous Rodgers, Hannah McAveny Rodgers and Stuart Howden Rodgers.

Margaret passed away on 4 August 1918 in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia and was buried at Sandgate Cemetery in Newcastle.[2]

FUNERAL OF MRS. J. S. RODGERS.
The funeral of the late Mrs. Margaret Eliza Rodgers, wife of Mr. James S. Rodgers, Laman-street, Cook's Hill, took place yesterday. The deceased lady, who was one of the oldest residents of the Newcastle district, in which she had lived during the 78 years of her life, is survived by her husband, five sons, two daughters, seventeen grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Rodgers were married 56 years ago by the late Rev. WV. Bain. The chief mourners were Mr. J. S. Rodgers (husband), Messrs. Archibald, James E., William, and Robert, sons (the other son, Mr. John R. Rodgers, being away from Newcastle); Mrs. W. D. Aird, and Mrs. H. W. Spence, daughters; Messrs. W. D. Aird and H. W. Spence, sons-in-law; Messrs. John, Wallace, and Keith, and Masters Allan, Norman, Stewart, Robert, Donald and Kenneth Rodgers, grandsons, Mrs. G. A. Adamson, jun., Mrs. W. Denney, Mrs. W. J. Herford, and the Misses Laurie and Elsie Aird, Margaret Spence, and Florence Rodgers, granddaughters, and Joan Adamson and Archie Rodgers, great grandchildren. A short service was conducted by the Rev. A. Torrens in the house. The cortege was headed by the members of the Lowlands Bowling Club, and the pallbearers were Mr. David Miller and Messrs. J. O'Mara, J. Meikle, and A. Gardiner, fellow directors of Mr. J. S. Rodgers on the board of the Newcastle and County Building Company. The interment took place in the Presbyterian portion of Sandgate Cemetery, the Rev. A. Torrens conducting the service. The family received many messages of condolence, and wreaths were sent by: Father, Archie and Lizzie; Jim and Flo, Will and Millie, Maggie and Wall, Allie and Horace, Bob and Jessie, Keith and Emily, Essie and Will (on active service), Ivy and Jack, Elsie and George, Margaret and Jack (on active service). Joan, Baby Archie, Lowlands Bowling Club, employees Hunter District Water Supply and Sewerage Board, St. Andrew's Presbyterian Sunday School, Engineers and Collieries Supplies Co., Messrs. R. and J.
