Biography

William Noah Howser (1844-1922) is buried with a sister, Meldonetta Metcalf and other family at Lakota Cemetery, Lakota, North Dakota. His wife, Mary A., and a daughter, Cora (1869-1889) are buried in Illinois.[1]

In 1850, the Houser family lived on their farm in Logan County, Illinois. Their farm was valued at $4200. The family included Joshua Houser, 44, a farmer; his wife, Rebecca, 39; their children, Meldonetta, 17; James M., 16; Louinda, 11; Malinda, 9, William, 5; and Fanny, 1. Living on nearby farms were two brothers of Joshua Houser: Aaron, and his family; and John, and his family.[2]

In 1860, the Houser family lived on their farm in Atlanta Township, Logan County, Illinois. The household included Josh Houser, 54, born in Kentucky, a farmer, with $9000 in real estate and $5000 in personal estate; his wife, Rebecca, 50, b. KY; their children, both b. Illinois, and both in school, William N., 16; and Fannie, 11. Also living with them were E. Ellis, 77; and Melinda Judd, 18, a school teacher.[3]

The United States National Park Service [4]lists a Private William J. Houser/Howser in Co. C, 66th Illinois Infantry, Union Army, and no other William Howser from that battle unit.

The 66th Illinois Infantry was engaged in many critical battles during the Civil War, including Shiloh, TN; Corinth, Miss.; Resaca, Kennesaw, Atlanta, and Jonesboro, GA; and Bentonville, NC. For full details, click the citation link below.[5]
