2 There is a discrepancy between her birth date shown on the 1870 census (1864) and that shown on her death certificate (1871). 2

Were we to assume for the sake of argument that the date in the death certificate is correct, then the census of 1870 would not list her since she wouldn't have been born yet. 2 <p>If, on the other hand, we assume that the census date is correct since she does appear there, we'd justify it further by considering that her parents, in answering the assistant marshal who recorded the census, would have been quite accurate in reporting their five year old daughter's birth date. 2 <p>But in the case of the death certificate, I know from personal experience that the people acting as informants often unknowingly or incompetently give incorrect information, so that's not beyond doubt here. 2 <p>After considering the facts I conclude that the date given in the census showing Emma's birth in 1864 is the correct birth year for Emma. 2 2 Emma was 5 years old in June 1870 when the census was taken, and turned 6 in July, a month later. Therefore the census year 1870 - 6 = 1864. Because she turns 6 on 27th July, 1870, she was born on 27th July, 1864.
