John M. Householder Homesteaded in Kearney County in the Eighties
John M. Householder, aged eighty-two years, died in St. Luke's hospital in Kearney, Friday evening, June 22. He suffered from a complication of troubles, with which his advanced age made it impossible to cope. Little hope was entertained for his recovery from the time he was first taken ill, a few weeks ago. Mr. Householder came to Nebraska and Kearney county in 1878 homesteading within one mile of old Fort Kearney, and he made his home there continually since that time. He is survived by six children, his wife having passed away less than one year ago. He had been twice married.
The funeral was held from Bower's chapel in Kearney, Sunday afternoon. The ritualistic service of the Grand Army of the Republic, of which he was a valued member, was given by members of Strong Post of Minden.
Mr. Householder was a man of decided opinions and strict integrity, whose worth of character called forth the respect and esteem of all who knew him.[2]
