Biographical Sketch

A SKETCH OF JONATHON HOUSEHOLDER By his Great-Granddaughter Olive R. [Ritchie] Cleverly [21 Mar 1881 - 28 Mar 1945, KWC8-WJ3]

This information I have of the Householder family was given by my mother Annie C. Russel Ritchie and Jane Lyons Sayer, the temple records and ward clerk, written by Agnes Maud Householder Deakin and given by Bessie R. Roger.

Jonathon Householder was born May, 1810 they belonged to the Penn. Dutch. He married Evean Painter and had seven children. Evean died when her seventh baby was three weeks old, in the year 1846, and her oldest being 12 years old. The children are: Elizabeth, William, John, Jonathon [Johnston], Jane, Hannah and Thomas.

Jonathon Householder married Elizabeth Spencer, they had [three] children Joseph, Mary Ann, and Alma. Elizabeth Householder married at Elizabethtown Pa. She had married twice before to James Clifford and had one child by him, Susana Clifford. Then she married James Lyons having six children by him.

Jonathon Householder joined the church in the year 1851. Jonathon Householder and family came to Utah in 1861*. They came with the Independent Co. Having their own oxen, horses, cows, and covered wagons. In their party was Jonathon Householder, his wife Elizabeth Spencer Householder, three children and William Householder son of Jonathon Householder and Evean Painter his wife, Susana Clifford was the daughter of James Clifford and Elizabeth Spencer. [*Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel lists Householders: Alma (5), Catherine (Unk), Hannah Ann (16), Jonathan (52), Joseph (12), Mary Ann (11) coming to Utah with 700 individuals in the John R. Murdock Company of 1862, departure date listed as 24 July 1862 arriving on 27 Sept 1862 - - Nadine Deakin Sharpe, 2012]

Susana Clifford had married before in Pa. to James Jones and had two children John and James Jones. James Jones the father of the children deserted his family to join the gold rush for California. Susana Clifford Jones divorced him and married William Householder they had two children, Johnston, and Sarah Ann. The children of Elizabeth Spencer Lyons Householder came with them.

Sarah Lyons married Thomas Bircks and they had two children. Then there were Cassie Lyons and Hughy Lyons who married Jane Farington. In coming across the plains sickness came among them. Then Cassie Lyons and Sarah Lyons Berche died and were buried along the trail, the rest came west and settled first at Morgan, Utah, then Salt Lake City then they went to Squire Wells farm at Pleasant Grove, Utah. Thomas Bircks went to Springville, Utah [and] Payson Utah with these children.

Grandfather walked and drove cows and calves, and he was quite a bible reader we still have his bible, yellow with age. Jonathon Householder had both wives sealed the same day in the Endowment house. Elizabeth caused grandfather to be vexed with her so had Hannah sealed first, that was the way as he told James Russell who married his daughter Elizabeth and came to Utah. Then they wanted to go back to Penn. Grandfather said, “Jimmie if you take your family back you will take them back to hell”.

Jonathon Householder and wife returned to Salt Lake City and lived in the 21st Ward and he died April 3, 1888 and was buried in Salt Lake City Cemetery.

Householder-422 and Householder-153 are not ready to be merged because: It seems the profiles match the first part of their lives, but not the last part. Different death dates, death location, different children.
