Biography

Hollis was born in 1839. He died in 1887.

HOLLIS AND (1) MARY HUCKABEE & (2) MIRANDA (MCDANIEL) HOUGH, SC & AL [1]

Hollis HOUGH (1813 Lancaster Co., SC-14 June 1887 Killian's Turnout, Richland Co., SC) is the son of Joel HOUGH, son of Amos and Sarah (Bivens) Hough from the 1828 litigation of Sarah Hough’s Will of Chesterfield, SC. Hollis served with his first cousins Benjamin and Stephen Doby Hough in the 1836 Florida War with the Seminole Indians. He enlisted 26 Feb 1836 and was discharged 14 Apr 1836. He was a Pvt. in Capt. Gibson’s Co., Goodwyn’s SC Mounted Militia.

Hollis Hough Warrant #24037 for 40a of the SC Volunteers, Florida War was located in SW1/4 of the SW 1/4 of Section 9, Twp 20 Range 7, at Lebanon , AL. The property seems to have ultimately become part of Clay County and became DeKalb county in 1836 and Etowah County in 1868. On 15 Apr 1856 the warrant was re-assigned to William BROWN. In 1850 and 1860 Hollis was residing in Tallapoosa County, AL which was also from the Cherokee Indian Cession where he received the Warrant Land Bounty. The reassignment may have been due to inadequate proof of service, see references.

Marriage and Family

Hollis HOUGH md (1) Mary HUCKABEE (1827/9 SC – bet 1870-73) and lived in Tallapoosa County AL in 1850 with a boarder Berry STACKS, an old SC neighborhood family. He is recorded as having no occupation. Still in Tallapoosa Co. in 1860, as Hollis HUFF, he was a bridge keeper and seemed to be childless. Mary Huckabee had been identified as wife of Hollid Hough in the 19 Feb 1850 Kershaw Co., SC Will of her uncle Joseph Murphy, a Planter.

NOTE: The eighteen year old Hollis Hough of Camden who, on 26 Aug 1861 enlisted at Camden as a CSA Pvt. in Co. D., 15th SC Infantry Capt. T.J. Warren’s Co. of De Saussure’s Regt’s SC Vols. is not our subject but is certainly from the early of the SC Hough families.

After the Florida Wars, Hollis lived in Butler Co., AL, Kershaw, Fairfield and Richland Cos., SC. Mary was alive in 1870 but on 15 Sep 1873, Hollis md Miranda MCDANIEL (1822 SC-5 June 1909 Pearson, GA) at Sumter, SC.

By 1870, Hollis is a farmer in Winnsboro, Fairfield Co., SC. The Non-population agricultural schedule shows his inventory; Cash Value of Land 15, one horse, two milch cows, three “other cattle”, four swine with total Value of Livestock $130. He also had 75 bushels of rotten corn and 3-400 bales of cotton. The total value of his inventory was $500. He real estate value was $150. This was considered a small farm and in 1880 if less than $500 would not be on the agricultural schedule. In 1880 son, James 14 was still living with them.

After Hollis died at Killian’s Turnout, the source of which is unknown, Miranda lived in Kershaw Co., SC. She applied for a Widow's Pension, which she received, #6261, for the Indian Wars. She stated he was 5 feet, 6 inches in height, had blue eyes, black hair, dark complexion, by occupation a farmer. Later, she moved to Pearson, GA, apparently to be near a daughter. She stated she had not been previously md, but she did have a dau, Mary A. JAMES, wife of W. P. JAMES. This dau collected sickness and funeral expenses when Miranda died. Supporting Miranda in her pension application were Ann T. GLENN and James BELK.

In 1870 the wife is Mary. The marriage of Miranda and Hollis is recorded as 1873 and she stated for her pension application that she had not been married. The dates clearly indicate the two children were by the first wife with the pension allowed for the second wife and subsequent widow. The Numerical Pension #6697 shows a certificate #6261 for "Meranda." [1].
