Abraham moved with his parents to Richland Co., Ohio in 1832.Their 60 acre homestead 1/2 mile NW of North Woodbury became part of present day Morrow County in 1848. In 1836, he joined the Lutheran church. He learned the carpenter and joiner trade which he followed for twenty-two years. Much of his early life was spend amid frontier surroundings. Abraham and Harriet (2nd wife) moved to Noble Co., Ind in 1847. The 1 Oct 1850 census for Jefferson Twp., Noble Co., Ind. shows Abraham to be a carpenter and living hear his brother Samuel and brothers-in-law, Henry and Samuel Dienfenbaugh. All are reported as carpenters. In 1859, Abraham moved his family to Andrew Co., Mo. near Savannah. On 15 Apr 1860, he moved to 160 acres in Section 26, Delaware Twp., Jefferson Co., Ks. He paid $1600 for this farm. During the Civil War, he suffered the usual renegade depredations such as burned stacks of feed and stolen livestock. He helped construct many of the early buildings (such as Octagon Hotel, V.P. Newman Blacksmith Shop) in and around Valley (Grasshopper) Falls. His original farm home and all contents were destroyed by fie on 16 June 1888 but was soon rebuilt. In early 1891, he sold his farm to S. Goesy for $5200. Abraham and Martha (third wife) became members of the Valley Falls Methodist Church on 9 May 1875. In 1891, Abraham became a member of the United Brethren church in the Woodville community (northwestern Jefferson county). [35]
