This Shropshire family owned Hopton Castle on the marches of Wales, but they are not well documented before the fourteenth century. Sir Walter Hopton held the manor as early as the reign of Stephen; he was the father of Sir Henry Hopton of Hopton, who lived in the second half of the twelfth century. His son Sir Walter Hopton married Joan, daughter of Robert de Cures. They were the parents of another Sir Walter Hopton, who married Isabel, daughter and heiress of Henry Stanton or Staunton. Their son Sir Peter Hopton of Stanton was the father of another Sir Walter Hopton, who married Joan, daughter of Robert Loughbrughe or Longbrughe. They were the parents of yet another Sir Walter Hopton, who had two sons: (1) John, see below, and (2) Nicholas, possibly but not certainly ancestor of another large Hopton family of Hopton, Welston, Canon Frome and other Shrpshire manors.
Sir John Hopton married Alice le Strange, and according to some sources had a son John who married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir William (probably not Sir John) Burley of Bromcroft. Stirnet thinks there was only one John, married twice, and that Elizabeth was the mother of the next Sir Walter Hopton, who married Joan, daughter of Thomas Young or Yong of Sibton. They were the parents of Thomas Hopton, who married Joan, daughter of Walter Mortimer - I cannot identify him, but he must have been one of the 'famous' Mortimers, who held much land in Shropshire. He must have been born around 1330 or 1340, which makes him about the right age to be one of the numerous grandsons of the first Earl of March.
Their son Sir Thomas Hopton was born c1388, and married Eleanor (c1407-c1460), daughter of Walter Lucy of Newington and Alienor Arcedekne. Two children: (1) Walter, died childless, and (2) Elizabeth (1427-1498), who married first Roger Corbet of Moreton Corbet (six or seven children); second John de Tiptoft, 1st Earl of Worcester (one son); and third Sir William Stanley of Holt (two or three children, including our ancestor Jane Stanley, wife of Sir John Warburton).

Note it's printed in italics and square brackets. This means it doesn't come from one of the better copies of the Visitation. It comes from the Shrewsbury School MS. This MS has several insertions from dubious sources. This pedigree is one of them.
