Biography

Agnes was the daughter of William Hopton and Margaret Wentworth.[1][2] Her parents had lands and interests in several counties and her birth place is not known. Her birth date has been estimated on the basis of her parents marrying in about 1450 and her husband being born by about 1452.[1][2]

Agnes married Robert Clere, son of Robert Clere of Ormesby St Margaret, Norfolk and Elizabeth Uvedale.[1][2] Their marriage date has been estimated, based on the possible approximate birth date of their daughter Elizabeth. They had the following children:

Agnes died on 23 January 1505/6, and was buried at Ormesby St Margaret, Norfolk.[1][2][3]

Her husband subsequently married Alice Boleyn, an aunt of Henry VIII's wife Anne Boleyn.[1][2]

The Harleian Society edition of the 1623 Visitation of Somerset names Agnes as Ann and her husband as Sir W Clere.[4]

Magna Carta Project

This profile was re-reviewed for the Magna Carta Project by Michael Cayley on 24 October 2023.
Agnes (Hopton) Clere appears in in trails badged in August 2015 by the Magna Carta Project from Gateway Ancestor Robert Peyton, through his father, to Magna Carta Surety Barons William d'Aubigné and Robert de Ros and was later identified in badged trails to surety barons Richard de Clare, Gilbert de Clare, John de Lacy, and Saher de Quincy. All of these trails are set out in the Magna Carta Trails section of the Gateway's profile.
See Base Camp for more information about identified Magna Carta trails and their status. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".
