Biography

Martha was born in 1849. She was the daughter of Elizabeth Colley. Martha Hooton was baptized 1 April 1849 All Hallows, Tottenham, daughter of Edward and Elizabeth. (same day as sister Margaret). In 1851 her grandfather James Sharp Colley (wrongly written as Thomas S Colley) born in Lambeth and was a widower and potter at Tile Kilns, Green Lanes, aged 64, living with a daughter Martha aged 36 born in Tottenham, an unmarried domestic, and a granddaughter Martha Hewton (sic Hooton) aged 3.

Martha Hooton 20 spinster, daughter of Edward Hooton of Arthur Road gardener, married William Carter labourer, of West Green, full age bachelor, son of Edward Carter deceased on 12 June 1865 at Bethnal Green. Both signed, witnessed by Edward Hooton and Susan Platten. In 1871 William 26 was a bricklayer’s labourer, born at Braintree, and living at Maxey road, Plumstead, with Martha 24 born at Tottenham, Edward 3 born at Plumstead, William 2 born at Folkestone, and Frederick 1 month born at Plumstead. In 1881 William 39 was an excavator, living in Vicarage road, Plumstead, with Martha 34, Edward 14, William 13, Charles 11, John 8 and George 6.
