John was born around 1834 in the Hamlet of Lymm Booths (aka Booths Hill), near the Village of Lymm, in the District of Altrincham, near the City of Manchester (Lancashire), in Cheshire, England, however, his baptism wasn't recorded. He is the son of Tanner, William (Hooley) and Mary Ann (Wood), who married on the 5 May 1823 with the consent of "those whose consent is required by law" at the Parish Church of St. Mary, off Congleton Road, in the Village of Nether Alderley, Parish of Alderley, in Cheshire, England. After their Banns were published, William and Mary Ann were married by Isaac (Bell), the Curate in front of witnesses William (Edwards) and Jane (Daniel)[1]. In 1841, John (7) lived with his parents William (40) and Mary Ann (40); siblings Harriet (8) and Mary (1) and Agricultural Labourer, Samuel (Barrow) (25). Their home was in the Hamlet of Lymm Booths (aka Booths Hill), near the Village of Lymm, in the District of Altrincham, near the City of Manchester (Lancashire), in Cheshire, England[2]. Now 17, John worked as a Joiner in 1851, still living with his parents William (50) and Mary Ann (49) and sister, Mary (10) at Lymm High Street, in the Village of Lymm, Cheshire, England[3].

On the 19 October 1857, John (23) married Ellen Skelhorn (25) at the Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St Mary, St Denys and St George, Victoria Street, in the City of Manchester, Parish of Manchester, in Lancashire, England. At the time of the marriage, John worked as a Joiner and he and Ellen lived at 75 Rutland Street, in Hulme. They were married after Banns by Chaplain William (Johnson) in front of James (Rastran) and Harriet (Hooley)[4][5][6]. The following children were born to the couple:--

  1. Margaret Ann Varley Skelhorn (Hooley), born between April and June 1857 in Millington, Altrincham, Cheshire[7];
  2. John William Hooley, born between April and June 1861 in Ashton upon Mersey, Altrincham, Cheshire[8];
  3. Charles Hooley, born between April and June 1863 in Ashton upon Mersey, Altrincham, Cheshire[9]; and
  4. Walter Hooley, born between October and December 1868 in Ashton upon Mersey, Altrincham, Cheshire[10].

Now married, in 1861, John (26) lived with wife Ellen (32); daughter, Margaret Ann (4); married sister, Harriet (Hooley/Goodyear) (29) and her husband, Whitesmith, Thomas (Goodyear) (28) at Macum Lane, in Ashton upon Mersey, on the south bank of the River Mersey, 5 miles (8.0 km) south of the City of Manchester, in the District of Altrincham, Cheshire, England[11]. The Hooley family had moved by 1871 and now lived at Church Street, in the Township of Bollin Fee, on the Bollin River, in Wilmslow Parish, near the Town of Stockport (Lancashire), District of Altrincham in Cheshire, England. John (36) and Ellen (43) lived with children John William (9), Charles (7) and Walter (2) and Boarder, Samuel (Mitchell) (20)[12].

However, a few short years later, John left Ellen and his children and boarded the vessel "Earl Dalhousie" on the 4 December 1874 at either the Port of London or Plymouth, England. He recorded himself as a Joiner who was a single man, arriving in Port Adelaide on the 23 February 1875[13].

By 1903, the Hooley family were living at Cemetery Road, in Beaconsfield, City of Perth, Western Australia. John, a Gentleman and Emma lived with children John Jonathan and Joseph Robert there[24]. John passed away on the 23 July 1904, at around the age of 70 (recorded as 74) at Yatala Vale, northeast Adelaide, South Australia, Australia[25]. It is not clear why John returned to South Australia but he was buried at Plot J on the 24 July 1904 at the Woodville Cemetery (aka Cheltenham Cemetery), High Street and Port Road, Cheltenham, Port Adelaide, City of Adelaide, South Australia, Australia[26].
