"The petition of Alley Hooks sheweth that Ephraim Hooks late of Wayne County died intestate in August 1818, leaving your petitioner his widow and Patsy, Raiford, Nancy, Patience, Hardy, Simeon & Wealthy Hooks his children & heirs at law--Said Ephraim Hooks died seized & possessed of two tracts of land, on the south side of the Great Swamp & on the north side of Nauharte; one tract wherein he resided estimated at one hundred and fifty-four acres; the other estimated at two hundred acres; and one tract in Johnston County on the head of Juniper Swamp, adjoining lands of Matthew Fulghan & Dixon Spring; estimated to contain one hundred fifty acres--said heirs are all infants and have no guardian; your petitioner desires that her dower in said lands shall be laid off to be in said lands & that writs of venire pay both Sheriffs of Wayne & Johnston Counties, to summon a jury to tax off a down in the same & that said heirs may be (summoned?) to their cause if any they have wherefore the prayer of this petition should not be granted.
Jacob Hooks was appointed special guardian of the infant defendants.[1]
