Albert Holthouse was born about 1842 in Pennsylvania. In the 1870 United States Census he and his wife Teresa, were living in the 5th Ward of Allegheny City, Pennsylvania. Albert worked as a paper merchant.
According to an 1872 Plat Map of Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, Albert W. Holthouse owned 12 lots along Sheffield Street in the Manchester Neighborhood of Allegheny City. Only one lot, number 110, had been developed. This was Albert and Teresa's home. The couple was still living there at the time of the 1880 United States Census, but Albert was unemployed and had sold off at least one of the lots. The lot at 126 Sheffield Street had been purchase by Charles W. Cooper and Elizabeth Demuth Cooper who were building their home there.
