"... a cabinet maker named Josiah Hollister, who worked for [George] Washington at Valley Forge, where he created a lovely upright wardrobe for the General, which delighted Martha, the General’s wife. In 1777, Josiah Hollister married Asenath Sweatland, who came from the prominent Lyman family in Manchester Green. Some years later, their grandson, the famous inventor Christopher Miner Spencer, created a seven-shot repeating rifle, which is widely credited with helping the North win the Civil War."[3]
Hollister Family of America -
"He served under Gen. Washington in the Revolution, and used to entertain his descendants with stories of his commander, and especially of Lady Washington, for whom he once made a wardrobe, which gave her great satisfaction, but him still more, as he never tired of telling of it.
Josiah Hollister was tall, straight, active, strong, and ambitious. He enjoyed vigorous health until he was more than seventy years of age, and retained a considerable degree of strength and his sight, hearing, and memory until his death, which occurred Sept. 8, 1849, in the 94th year of his age. He settled in what is now South Manchester, Conn., and the farm which he owned is now owned by the husband of his great-granddaughter, Mrs. Martha (Hollister) Taylor. His grave is to be found in the Manchester center cemetery.
He was twice married; first to Mary House of Glastonbury, Aug. 11, 1780; she was born Sept. 15, 1760, and died July 15, 1786, aged 25. She was a daughter of Daniel House and Hollister. He married second, Asenath Sweetland; she was born Sept. 15, 1763, and died June 5, 1844, in her 81st year. She was a daughter of Israel Sweetland of S. Manchester, Conn., whose mother was a Lyman, and Dorcas Dewey, whose mother was a Gaines."[4]
