Biography

Joseph was a Friend (Quaker)

Quaker meeting minutes give his birth as 10 5th 1686 (10 Jul 1686) as son of Vallentine and Ann Hollingsworth.[1][2]

He appears first in records as an adult when he signs a deed dated May 7, 1711 at purchase of land in Cecil County, Maryland by his half-brother Henry Hollingsworth.[3] He again witnessed a deed of Feb. 7, 1720-1721 when his nephew Abraham Hollingsworth sold land to Henry Hollingsworth. His last appearance in Cecil County is in a deed of Dec. 17, 1721. He resided in that county as shown by the deed.[4]

It may be read that he probably accompanied his nephew Abraham, Isaac Parkins and other friends to Opeckan about 1729 or 1730.

Research Notes

  • His death place was listed as being in what is now Frederick County, VA.
  • I propose that Joseph Hollingsworth and Mary Elizabeth be attached as spouses. They both are mentioned in the book by Arthur Hollingsworth entitled ""Clorman - Hollingsworth Family Tree" (Linda Leslie, 19 Mar 2022).

Another Joseph Hollingsworth

The following would appear to pertain to another Joseph Hollingsworth:

He married Martha Houghton, daughter of John and Ann Houghton of New Castle, 23 Apr 1730 and this record gives his residence as Christina Hundred, New Castle.[5][6] The Harlan genealogy citing deeds states the family was in Chester County, Pennsylvania in 1937[7] and gives the date of the families membership certificate transfer to Hopewell Monthly Meeting in Virginia as 1741.

Death
