Biography

Elizabeth A. "Eliza" (Hollinger) Leath was born about 1778 in Georgia, based on census records. According to a Greene County, Ga. deed dated 17 January 1797, she was the daughter of Alexander Hollinger and the granddaughter of Titus Hollinger. She married Peter Leath, and the couple moved about 1806 from Georgia (possibly Washington County) to Wilson County, Tennessee.

Peter and Nancy were the parents of at least nine known children:

  • William E. Leath (1802-1888), married Olive (Polly) Fields
  • Nancy M. Leath (1804-1888), married Ira Barber
  • Marcus Hatton Leath (1807-1867), married Mary Barber
  • Mary A. (Polly) Leath (1810-1887), married Thomas Barber
  • Sarah P. (Sally) Leath (1811-1909), married William Robert Lannom
  • Martha M. Leath (1813-1894), married Joseph (Joe) Barber
  • Harriet Leath (1815-1850), married Robert S. Ricketts
  • John A. Leath (1816-1890), married Frances J. (Fanny) Gibson
  • Peterson Goodwin Leath (1818-1903), married Selina Harriett Lannom

Nancy was named as the beneficiary of Peter's plantation in Peter's will which was dated 1839; the will was probated in Wilson County in 1840. She appears as a widow and property owner in District 23 of Wilson County in the censuses of 1840, 1850, and 1860. She died in Wilson County on 17 February 1865, intestate, and her son John A. Leath was appointed administrator by the county court.
