Travers Neil Holland was born on 3rd August 1908 in Clifton Hill, Victoria, Australia. He was the third son of Thomas Holland and Mabel Falkingham. [1] He was raised on the family's small mixed farm in Flinders, on the Mornington Peninsula.
On 20th October 1939, upon hearing the declaration of (the Second World) War, Travers enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial Force. [2] Serving with the 2/7th Infantry Battalion, he saw action in Libya against the Italians in January-March 1941 followed by the battles of Greece and Crete in April-May, where the battalion was essentially destroyed after the majority of its personnel were captured. Rebuilt in Palestine, the 2/7th undertook garrison duties in Syria and then Ceylon (Sri Lanka) before being transported back to Australia in August 1942.
Whilst at home, Travers married Mollie Shaw in 1942 in Victoria. [3]
In January 1943, the battalion was deployed to New Guinea, taking part in the fighting against the Japanese in the Salamaua–Lae campaign until October 1943. The battalion's final campaign was in the Aitape–Wewak area of New Guinea in December 1944 – August 1945. Travers was demobilised on 18th July 1946 holding the rank of Captain. For his war service, Travers was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945 and Australia Service Medal 1939-1945.
Aged 82 years, he passed away in 1991 in Victoria. [4]
