Justin Holland was a classical guitarist, arranger, and music teacher in the 1800's, nationally known for publishing numerous guitar arrangements and guitar methods. He was also a civil rights activist who worked with the Underground Railroad and fought for recognition of Prince Hall Freemasons.
Justin was born about 1819 in Virginia as a free person of color; his father Exum was a farmer. When Justin was a young teenager he moved to Boston, Massachusetts followed by nearby Chelsea, Massachusetts where he studied guitar from several well-known performers.
He attended Oberlin College in Ohio for two years, then travelled to Mexico in order to learn Spanish so that he could read and study the methods of some famous Spanish guitarists. He returned to Oberlin in 1845, married Delphine Minor, and settled in Cleveland, Ohio where he gave music lessons and arranged music for the guitar. He gained a national reputation as an arranger and published approximately 350 arrangements along with two books on guitar methods.
In addition to his music, he was a leader in the black Free Masons (Prince Hall) and active with the Underground Railroad.
He passed away in 1887 at his son's home in New Orleans, Louisiana. His widow Delphine survived him, along with at least two children. A historical marker to honor him was erected by Virginia's Department of Historic Resources in 2013 in Chesapeake, Virginia.
