{ Joseph Reuben Hoke was born and raised in the Palama District. He was the son of Charles Joseph Hoke of Kohala, Hawaii and Mary de Freitas Hoke of Madeira, Portugal. He was the eldest of twelve children. In the 1920s and 1930's, he was an infamous bootlegger. He was killed in an accident while operating a tractor on Kaalaea Hill, Oahu.
While married to Alice Kawailani Kahalehiwa Allen, he had three children, Irene, Carol and Joseph, Jr. }
