Biography

Willa was born in 1879 in West Milford in Harrison County, West Virginia, the daughter of James Dallas Hoff and Susan Matilda Dew. She grew up on the family farm in West Milford, and at age 21 married Lloyd Fletcher Chalfant there. The couple settled in the Shinnston-Clarksburg area in Harrison County, where Lloyd was a foreman in a mill, and later did building contractor work. They had three children together. Willa also tried her hand running a pastry shop in Clarksburg. Her husband Lloyd died in 1955. In her later years, Willa moved to live with or near her daughter in Columbus, Ohio, and she died there in 1965. She is buried with her husband in Shinnston Memorial Cemetery in Shinnston, WV.

Pretty Wedding

Solemnized at West Milford in Presence of Fifty Invited Guests

The marriage of Miss Willa Hoff and Mr. Lloyd Chalfant took place at 8:30 o'clock Wednesday evening at the house of Mr. and Mrs. James Hoff, of West Milford, parents of the bride. The Misses Lucy Hoff, sister of the bride, and Anna Chalfant, sister of the bridegroom, were bridesmaids, and Messrs. A.B. Bartlett and O.W. Ladwig were the groom's attendants. Rev. Dr. William M. Hudson, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, of this city, officiated in the presence of about fifty guests. The bride wore a beautiful white organdie and her maids were dressed tastily in blue. After the ceremony refreshments were served.
