When Ervin Maurice Hoag was born on October 12, 1923, in Staten Island, New York, his father, Maurice, was 31 and his mother, Aileen, was 32. He married Alys Jane Pierce in October 1963 in Chatham, New Jersey. He died on May 19, 2018, in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, at the age of 94.

Hoag Former mayor and fire chief, longtime resident of Chatham Township, 94 The celebration of Ervin Hoag's life will be held on Sunday, June 24, 2018, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Chatham Township Municipal Building, 58 Meyersville Rd., Chatham Township, N.J. A remembrance of his life will start at 3 p.m. All who wish to attend and share memories are cordially invited. Mr. Hoag passed away peacefully on May 19, 2018, at the Center for Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains, N.J. Born in 1923, on Staten Island, N.Y., he lived a full life. He graduated from SUNY Agricultural College in Farmingdale, L.I. He was a corporal in the 3rd Marine Division serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After the war, Mr. Hoag managed several dairy farms in New York and North Carolina, including Elliott Roosevelt's farm at Valkill, Hyde Park, N.Y. Mr. Hoag established Chanticler Farm in Chatham Township in 1953. The farm became Chanticler Farm Nursery. He often said his most enjoyable job was as a school bus driver. For over 25 years he transported Chatham Township students to the township public schools. He was a life member and former chief of the Chatham Township Fire Department. He served as president of the Board of Education, president of the Board of Health, two terms on the Township Committee, and as mayor of Chatham Township in 1971 and 1972. In later years, he was chair of the Tree Committee and a trustee of the Adult School of the Chathams, Madison, and Florham Park. He loved nature, the out-of-doors, and enjoyed hiking locally, and was an avid reader of all genres of books.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Barbara Ann (Hogan), in 1963, and his second wife, Alys Jane (Pierce Cromwell), in 1990. Mr. Hoag is survived by his wife, partner and companion of 27 years, Susan (Runge) Hoag, and his children, of whom he was very proud: Carolyn (David) Parks of Vero Beach, Fla.; Christine Cromwell (Christopher) Ahrens of Etchingham, England; Glenn (Bodil) Hoag of Valrico, Fla.; Cathryn Hoag of Leesburg, Va.; Melissa (Mark) Rogers of Pipersville, Pa.; Mary Ann Hoag of Woodside, Queens, N.Y., and Andrew (Betsy) Hoag of Mattapoisett, Mass. He leaves his seven beloved grandchildren: Danielle Zanolli, Michael, Nicole and Kayla Hoag, Meghan and Meredith Rogers and Gabrielle Hoag, and his two great-grandsons, Camron Zanolli and Connor Hoag-Rogers. Mr. Hoag also leaves many beloved nieces and cousins. He was a member of the Greatest Generation and will be terribly missed by all who knew and admired him.
