Sussex (historic flag, adopted 2011)
Abel Hoadley was born in Willingdon, Sussex, England.

Abel Hoadley was born in 1844, in Willingdon, Sussex, England, the son of the son of Peter Hoadley (blacksmith) and Elizabeth Ann Wheeler. His birth was registered in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1844 in the Eastbourne district.[1] He was baptised on the 2nd February 1849, in East Grinstead.[2]

In the 1851 census Abel (age 6) was the son of Peter Hoadly in East Grinstead, Sussex, England.[3]

In the 1861 census, he was an apprentice grocer, living in the household of Ebenezer Roberts, in Brasted, Kent.[4] However he suffered from ill-health, and it was thought he might better benefit from a change of climate.

Abel Hoadley migrated from England to Victoria, Australia.

He arrived in Australia in 1865 on the Essex as an Unassisted Immigrant.[5] After settling in Victoria, he began selling jams and pickles, which he had made with produce fresh from his own orchard in Burwood East. Later he opened a jam factory in South Melbourne (1889), trading as A. Hoadley & Company. Later still, he began to produce confectionery (in the Rising Sun Preserving Works in 1895), as that was not dependent on seasonal ingredients. He started to include a portion of honeycomb with his chocolate sales, something that proved extremely popular. Soon afterwards he began to manufacture an individual honeycomb bar. This proved a little more difficult to manage, as the honeycomb stuck to itself, so he came up with the idea of coating the honeycomb with chocolate - and thus the "Violet Crumble" bar was born. Originally he planned to name it simply "Crumble", but was soon aware that would be an unprotectable name. Putting his thinking cap on, he thought of his wife (Susannah) and how her favorite flower was the violet. Not long afterwards, encased in a purple wrapper with a small flower logo, the "Violet Crumble" made its appearance , becoming an instant success. (It was still extremely popular in the 2010s.)

He and Susannah Ann Barrett were married on the 14th November 1868, in Fitzroy,[6] subsequently having 14 children, five daughters, and nine sons:

  1. Peter Benjamin (1869–1941)
  2. Elizabeth Ellen (1870–?)
  3. Rose Isabella (1872–1950 (Dodd))
  4. Emily Sarah (1874–1916)
  5. Walter Edwin Clifford (1875–1953)
  6. Bertha Annie (1878–1970 (Christie))
  7. Louisa Agnes (1880–1965 (Adamson))
  8. Percy Ernest (1883–1884)
  9. Frank Ernest (1885–1898)
  10. Charles Archibald Brookes (1887–1947)
  11. Albert Edgar Barrett (1888–1944)
  12. Norman Augustus (1890–1890)
  13. Rupert Ebenezer (1890–1890)
  14. Harold Edmund (1891–1891)

Abel Hoadley passed away on the 12th May 1918, in his home, “Bella Vista”, in Kew, Victoria, Australia, aged 73 years,[7] and was interred in the Burwood Cemetery, Burwood, where his wife would also later be laid to rest.[8] As well as his wife, he was survived by four of his daughters, and four of his sons.
