Biography

Ellen-Ann Hoadley was born about 1824. No entry has been found in the Seaford, Sussex register for her birth, although this is her birth location as claimed in the 1851 Census.

In the 6 Jun 1841 Census Ellen is aged 15, living at Seaford, Eastbourne, Sussex in the household of Samuel Newington aged 65 and his two sons james and Samuel, with her mother Anne Hoadley is aged 50, a dressmaker, born in Winchelsea, Sussex. There is also a Mary Cook in the household. [1]

Ellen Ann married Henry Harbord on 23 May 1845 in Seaford, Sussex. Interestingly she names her father as William Hoadley who is deceased, Henry's father was Benjamin Harbord a coastguard. Both were living at Seaford. The ceremony was pefprmed by Henry Malin the curate and witnessed by Robert Green, Elizabeth Harbord, Frederick William Lower and Matilda Harriet Earle,[2]

Ellen-Ann and Henry had a son Henry (Harry) Horace Harbord on 18 Jun 1850 and he was baptised on 12 Aug 1850 in Seaford, Sussex by J Carnegie the vicar. The entry states that Henry was a mariner. [3] Harry Horace may have been registered as Henry Hower Harbord, with the mother's maiden surname of Headley [4]

In the 30 Mar 1851 Census Ellen-Ann is aged 27 living at at Seaford, Sussex, with her husband Henry Harbord a mariner aged 27, born in Ireland, their son Henry Horace Harford, aged 9 months, born in Seaford, Sussex with her monther Ann Hoadley a widow (the census originally had her as unmarried which given her surname is possibly correct) aged 64, born in Winchelsea, Sussex, a dressmaker, with a lodger Mary Ann Lindsay, aged 27, her son James Lindsay aged 1 week, and a visitor Naomi Green aged 50 a laundress. [5]

Ellen-Ann and Henry had a daughter Catherine Everett Harbord on 6 Sep 1852 and she was baptised on 3 Oct 1852 in Seaford, Sussex by J Carnegie the vicar. The entry states that Henry was a mariner. [6] The GRO entry has Ellen-Ann's maiden surname as Hoodley.[7]

Ellen-Ann and Henry had a son Robert William Harbord in Q4 1856. Ellen-Ann-s surname is correctly registered for this birth [8]

Ellen-Ann and Henry moved to Durham before 1861

In the 7 Apr 1861 Census Ellen-Ann is aged 37, a dressmaker born in Seaford, Sussex is living at Seaton Carew, Durham with her husband Henry Harbord, aged 37, a Light Decker Tees, her son Henry H aged 11, born in Seaford, Sussex and daughter Catherine E aged 8, born in Seaford, Sussex and mother Ann Hoadley aged 74, a widow born in Winchelsea, Sussex. [9]

In the 2 Apr 1871 Census Ellen-Ann is aged 47, a dressmaker, born in Seafrd, Sussex, living at Ashburn Street, Seaton Carew, Hartlepool Durham with her daughter Catherine E Harberd, aged 18, born in Seaford, Sussex and son Robert William Harberd, aged 14, born in Seaford, Sussex. Her husband Henry must be at sea.[10]

In the 5 Apr 1891 Census Ellen-Ann is aged 67 living at South End, Charles Street, Seaton Carew, Durham with her husband Henry Harbord, aged 67 a retired mariner. Interestingly this census states that Henry was born in Seaford, Sussex the same as his wife. This census records them as Harboard.[11]
