Biography

Rachel F Hitt, daughter of George Washington Hitt and Letitia Sarah Henderson, was born June 9, 1843 in Thorn, Perry, Ohio. She married Josiah Smeadley on April 9, 1865 in Perry County, Ohio[1]. Rachel died August 15, 1913 in Bellingham, Whatcom, Washington[2] and was buried in Bayview Cemetery, Bellingham, Whatcom, Washington[3].

Josiah and Rachel F (Hitt) Smeadley had the following children:

Obituary

Obituary in Bellingham Herald, 16 Aug 1913[10]:

SMEADLEY--Rachel F. Smeadley, aged 70 years, passed away at the family residence, 2807 Woburn street, Friday afternoon at 5 o'clock, after a lingering illness. Mrs. Smeadley came with her husband, J. Smeadley, to this city more than twenty-four years ago from Snohomish county, Wash. Aside from her husband she is survived by a son, Cicero Smeadley, of Bellingham, and two daughters, Mrs. L. A. Oliver, of this city, and Mrs. Ella Wright, of Harrington, Kan., besides six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. There are also four brothers and two sisters surviving Mrs. Smeadley, all residing in the East. Funeral services will be conducted at the chapel of Nock & Harlow, 1051-1055 Elk street, Sunday forenoon, August 18, at 9:30 o'clock, the Rev. M. L. Goff, of the Baptist church, officiating. Interment will be in Bay View cemetery. The funeral car will leave from C and Carolina streets Sunday morning at 9 o'clock, conveying the funeral party to the chapel.

Cause of death listed as "organic heart disease" with gallstones as a contributory factor.
