Biography

Susannah (Hinckley) Smith immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Susannah Hinckley was baptized at St Mildred's, Tenterden, Kent, England, 6 November 1625, daughter of Samuel Hinckley and Sarah Soole.[1][2]

Samuel Hinckely, his wife, three children (Susan, Sara and Mary), and a kinswoman, "Elzab." immigrated to New England in 1635 aboard the Hercules, departing Sandwich.[3] [4]

The family first settled at Scituate, Plymouth Colony,[5] but had removed from there to Barnstable by 1639. Anderson (2003) writes, "'Samuell Hinckley' appears in both the Scituate and Barnstable sections of the 1639 Plymouth Colony list of freemen (although his name was not crossed off the Scituate section}."[6][7][8]

Susannah Hinckley married, by 1644, John Smith (first known child born Barnstable, April 1644).[9]

Her father died at Barnstable, the "end of October" 1662[10] He left a will dated 8 October, 1662, proved 4 March, 1662/3, at Plymouth.[11] The will mentions his daughter "Susanna."

Research Notes

Torrey notes her marriage to John Smith as Sandwich, 13 June 1643.[12] In which of his works consulted was that date and location found?
An unidentified work reports an unsourced death, 6 Nov 1675, Barnstable, Massachusetts. From what work does that claim arise? Is a source cited? Note: Not as death, but the date "11-6-1624" is given in a "Maine Cemetery Record" form. The entries are handwritten, and the date appears in the field "Born"--the field "Death" was left blank. "Barnstable, Mass." is given in the only location field ("Town") on the form. In theory, it is possible the basis for a "6 Nov 1675, Barnstable" death claim arises from a bad reading and interpretation of the data on this form--"Maine, Nathan Hale Cemetery Collection, ca. 1780-1980," database with images, FamilySearch. (6 November-- in 1625 is her baptismal, not birth, date.)
One or more works claims she was buried at old or "Old Town" cemetery, Sandwich. A comment to her profile suggests the claim might arise from an interpretation in Freeman. Presumably this is Frederick Freeman, The History of Cape Cod … (Boston: Printed for the author, 1860-62), 2 vols.; catalog record, Hathi Trust. Comments to this profile report that claim has yet to be located in Frederick Freeman's work. Further, from a 2019 comment to this profile, we learn the Sturgis Library reports "She is not listed in Bunnell's 'Cemetery Inscriptions of the Town of Barnstable, Massachusetts and its Villages 1600-1900.'"

On her husband’s page in the bio section — they were both buried in the Old Town Cemetery in Sandwich. Source is Freeman, but the page is wrong. I have not found anything yet in the Freeman book about the burial. Also other Freeman citations are wrong.

Heard back from the Sturgis Library. She is not listed in Bunnell's "Cemetery Inscriptions of the Town of Barnstable, Massachusetts and its Villages 1600-1900."

Bobbie, true. I need to check on who actually went with him.

He's buried in the Sandwich cemetery, so John probably didn't remain in NJ if he ever went.

May not be relevant, but according to their son Samuel’s profile, he and his father & brothers went to New Jersey in 1676, no mention of Susannah.

I've just sent a query to the Barnstable Sturgis library for a lookup in Paul Bunnell's "Cemetery Inscriptions of the Town of Barnstable, Massachusetts and its Villages 1600-1900" Will advise if I get a response.

I also see that the source provided for her death/burial (#4 currently) includes nothing about a death.

Her burial/death is not listed in the Barnstable VRs. But they may have started after she died. See http://ma-vitalrecords.org/MA/Barnstable/Barnstable/DeathsS.html

Hi Jillaine,

While working on the Research Notes, I looked at the source, "Maine, Nathan Hale Cemetery Collection, ca. 1780-1980," database with images, FamilySearch.

This is a form, into which handwritten entries have been made. In upper entry about Susannah we find her dob in a form field, "11-6-1625."

It is possible that somewhere in time (smile), someone mistook the form data field, "Born" as a report of death, and further mis-read the year 1625 as 1675.

I have an objection to the recently added burial information and the source used. The source seems to be information from someone's personal files, and not actually burial information. Then I don't think someone who died about 6 Nov 1675 would be buried in Dec. I don't think there are firm dates for any of this.

The place itself may be accurate enough
