George was born about 1793[1]. He is the son of Godfried Hilts and Maria Catharine Miller.
During the War of 1812, George Hilts/Hiltz/Hultz served as a private in the 1st York Militia. In 1812, he served in Captain Selby’s Flank Company. George volunteered for service in this special company that was created and trained to engage the Americans on the Niagara Frontier in 1812. Men from this company were known to have been at the Capture of Detroit and the Battle of Queenston Heights that year but unfortunately the militia rolls for those engagements have not been found. Serving in the same regiment were Christopher, Jacob, Jeremiah, and John Hilts who may all have been George's brothers or relatives.
From July 1 to Aug. 4, 1812, he served in Capt. Selby’s Co. and deserted on the 4th. [3]
Sometime between Aug. 6 to Oct. 24, 1812, he served in Capt. Selby’s Co. [4]
From Nov. 25 to Dec. 24, 1812, he served in Capt. Selby’s Co. [5]
From June 28 to July 16, 1813, he served in Major Samuel Wilmot’s Detachment. [6]
From Sept. 25 to Oct. 3, 1813, he served in Capt. John Arnold’s Co. [7]
From Dec. 25, 1813 to Jan. 21, 1814, he served at York in Capt. Reuben Richardson’s Co. [8]
From July 8 to 24, 1814, he was on duty in Capt. James Fenwick’s Co. [9]
From July 25 to 27, 1814, he served in Capt. Fenwick’s Co. [10]
On Feb. 23, 1819, George Hilts, a yeoman of Markham Twp., made a land petition. He was born in the US, had been in Upper Canada for 18 years, had a wife and 2 children, was the son of Godfrey Hilts of Markham, and was 25 years old. [11]
George G. Hilts, a yeoman of Markham Twp. and a former private in a flank company of the 1st York Militia, received 100 acres on the east half of Lot 2, Con. 6 SHS, Mono Twp. [12]
