Research Notes

Looking For

  • Still on the hunt for a manumission record of Francis, he may have been manumitted in Maryland or D.C.
  • identifying Mary and Sarah from the 1850 census, as well as the Coles from the 1860 census
  • it would be great to determine a if there was a marriage between Francis and Eliza / what their relationship was, or if Francis was the father of Eliza’s children, in the 1840 census of Enos Ray, enslaver of Eliza and her children, there are two free colored men, it is suspected Francis is the elder of the two. With Eliza being in the household of Francis in 1870, and them both being members of Emory Church in DC, it is known there is a relationship between the two.
