John Telemachus Hilton was an American abolitionist, author, and businessman, who established barber, furniture dealer, and employment agency businesses.[1]
John was born about 1801. He passed away in 1864.
Hilton and other Prince Hall Freemasons were founding members of the Massachusetts General Colored Association.
John married Lavina F. Ames on 31 October 1825 in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[2] [3]
By 1830, John T. Hilton had a storefront for a hairdressing shop; the store also included his employment agency, retail sales, furniture commission sales, and local event ticket sales.[4]
By 1838, Hilton was the president of the New England Temperance Society of Colored Americans
In the 1850 census John (age 48), Hairdresser, was in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States.[5]
In 1854, Hilton became vice-president of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society.[4] He was also a member of the Boston Vigilance Committee.
In the 1855 census John (age 54) was in Brighton, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States.[6]
In the 1860 census John (age 59), Barber, was in Brighton, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[7]
John died (age 62) on 5 March 1864 in Brighton, Massachusetts, United States.[8]
