William was a Friend (Quaker)

William was born in Wensleydale, Yorkshire in 1697, the son of John Hillary and Mary Robinson.[1]

William studied medicine at the University of Leyden, and graduated in 1722.[2] As a doctor, he worked in Ripon, Yorkshire and Bath, Somerset. From 1752 to 1758 he worked in Barbados. In 1758 he returned to England, settling in London.[2]

William published a number of medical books, including:[3]

  • Rational and Mechanical Essay on the Small-pox (1735, 2nd edition 1740)[2]
  • An Enquiry into the Contents and medicinal virtues of Lincomb Spaw Water, near Bath (1742)
  • Observations on the Changes of the Air, and the Concomitant Epidemical Diseases in the Island of Barbados, to which is added a Treatise on the Bilious Remittent Fever (1759) - this included the first description of tropical sprue, a disease affecting the intestines[2]
  • The nature, properties, and laws of motion of Fire, etc (1760)
  • An Inquiry into the means of improving medical knowledge, by examining all those methods which have hindered, or increased its improvement in all past Ages. To which is added, an explanation of the motion and action of fire, in and upon the human body, both in continuing life, and in producing and curing diseases (1763)

William died in London, age 63, of a fever on 25 April 1763. His Quaker death record describes him as of St Dunstan's in the West, London.[4][5] He was buried at Bunhill Fields Quaker Burial Ground on 1 May 1763.[5]

Wikipedia gives his death date as 22 April 1763;[2] his Quaker death records give the date as 25 April.
