Biography

Emmanuel Hill migrated from Hampshire to Canada.

Emmanuel (or Emanuel) Percy "Man" Hill, one of the sons of George Hill (abt.1821-1865) and Georgiana Maria (Harris) Mansell (abt.1824-1895), was born on Feb. 1, 1859 in South Stoneham, Hampshire, England.^[1][2] He migrated to Canada with his widowed mother and siblings aboard the S.S. Hibernian in May 1868.^[3] The family lived in St. Stephen's Ward in Toronto, where Percy took up an occupation variously described as tailor, trimmer or cutter.^{[4][5][6][7][8]}

On Sept. 10, 1896 in Toronto, he married Mary Jane Beale.^[9] Their family grew to include:

• Ira Charles Henry Hill (b. 1897)
• Percy Harold Hill (1899-1966)
• Edna Florence (Hill) Stitt (abt.1902-)
• Leonard Hadley Hill (b. 1904)
• Gladys Hill (b. 1906)

The family continued to live in Toronto through 1899,^[10] but then moved to Buffalo, NY for six years (where Edna, Leonard and Gladys were born).^[11] By 1911 they had returned to Toronto, where Emmanuel now worked as a silver plater,^[12] and subsequently as a machinist.^[13]

Emmanuel Percy Hill died on June 11, 1940, at home in Toronto,^[14] and was buried on the 13th in Toronto's Prospect Cemetery.^[15]
