Biography

Samuel Hicks Sr. immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Birth and Origins

Samuel was the 5th child of Pilgrims, Robert & Margaret Hicks, and was baptized 18 August 1611 at St. Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey, Surrey, England, the son of Robert and Margaret (Unknown) Hicks.[1][2][3]

Immigration

He emigrated with his mother and siblings on the Anne in 1623, two years after his father, Robert Hicks, arrived on the Fortune, in November, 1621.[4]

Marriage and Children

Samuel married Lydia Doane, daughter of Deacon John Doane and Ann ? Perkins, on 11 Sep. 1645 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[5] According to the will of Samuel's mother, Margaret Hicks, by 1655 Samuel and Lydia had at least seven children children.[6] Children:

  1. Sarah Hicks was born in 1649 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts.
  2. Thomas Hicks was born about 1650 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts and died in 1698 in Portsmouth, Newport, Rhode Island, about age 48.
  3. Joseph Hicks was born in 1650 in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachussets5 and died on 6 Aug 1709 in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts at age 59.
  4. Samuel Hicks was born in 1651 in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts.
  5. Dorcas Hicks was born on 14 Feb 1652 in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts.
  6. Margaret Hicks was born on 9 Mar 1654 in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts.
  7. Joan Hicks was born in 1667 in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts.

Life in New England

Samuel was proposed to be made a freeman of Plymouth at the next court, on 7 Sep. 1641.[7] and was listed as a freeman at Plymouth Court on 1 Mar 1643.[8] He appeared on 7 Jun 1670 when he was listed as a Selectman for Dartmouth[9]; also on 29 May 1670 when he was listed as a freeman of Dartmouth.[10]

Death & Estate

Samuel's last known appearance in records found to-date is 1 Jul 1672 in a court record where he was listed as a "manager" of the various pleas related to land purchases, indicating it was most likely Samuel Sr. and not his son who would have been only 21 and would probably not have held a position with that authority.[11]

His estate at Dartmouth was appraised on 29 June 1677 and exhibited in court at Plymouth on 7 July 1677 on the testimony of Lydia Hicks, widow.[12]

A search of the Plymouth colony records beginning 1678 does not find mention of Hicks so it seems very likely he was dead or had moved by that date.

A death record for Samuel or his wife has not yet been found.[6]

Hicks-18785 and Hicks-54 appear to represent the same person because: Only one son, Samuel. No evidence of Edward as middle name.

I notice y'all include Elizabeth Hicks Small as a child of Samuel Hicks Sr. in the "Father of" section, but not in the "Biography." The only link I've been able to find between the two is Underhill's "Descendants of Edward Small of New England," Revised Edition, 1934. Page 125 says the Elizabeth that Francis Small married was "probably surnamed Hicks" and provides no sources. Just wondering what the experts on the Hicks family think. Is Elizabeth a daughter of Samuel Sr?

Also, the source (#6) in the Biography above for Samuel's list of kids is an article on his father's children. I assume the sourcing is in error or I'm reading the article wrong.

From Family Search Life Sketch. Please note the DEATH DATES are unsourced and unproven.

"CAUTION: Unfortunate merges have combined people of different identities and information but of the same names. This PID is an early submission with LDS data so am trying to restore him to his correct data as per professional scholarship in "The Great Migration Begins" by NEHGS. And from "The Doane Family," pages 19–20 about Samuel Hickes and his wife Lydia Doane. This source documents that they went to Eastham (or Nauset) by 1646–1649. He returned to Plymouth where two children were born and was constable in 1654. He was an inhabitant sometimes of Barnstable. By 1662 he was of Dartmouth, Plymouth Colony, British Colonial America. "The Doane Family" pp. 19–20 states that "No record appears of the deaths of Samuel and Lydia Hicks. They had at least seven children, two of whom, Dorcas born Feb. 14, 1652 and Margaret born Mar. 9, 1654, were born at Plymouth. Davis says, there was a son Samuel born 1651 and Austin's Dictionary of Rhode Island Families gives a son Thomas, a carpenter of Dartmouth, Mass., and Portsmouth, R. I., who married Mary, daughter of John and Dorothy Albro. Margaret Hicks' will, dated July 8, 1655, bequeaths to her son Samuel and his family as follows: "I give unto my son Samuel hicks five pounds; Item I give unto my son Samuels children ten shillings apiece; there being seven of them; all the above said legacies my will is shall bee payed by that which is owning to meet from my above said son Samuel hikes which debt is ten pounds Really and truly owing to meet from my sad son; the above said legacies being what I can doe for him and his; her having already Received a large portion of that which god hath given meet; not only in lands but also in goods and chattels which was not only my husbands and son Ephraims estate formerly but also given to meet by will att my son Ephraims death." See Alfred Alder Doane, "The Doane Family, I. Deacon John Doane, of Plymouth;" (Boston, Ma.: 1902), 19–20.

Thanks for your interest in this profile Patricia. If you'd like to add biographical details, please do. The "Doane Family" does provide at least some of it's sources, which is good. I agree that his death is unsourced other than "after 1670" when he was apparently a freeman and deputy to the Colony Court from Dartmouth. I will make edits to that effect.

Also, the linked-to family tree concerns a Samuel Hicks of Virginia, not the New England man.

Jilliane, if you look on Bluegrass Messenger it lists most of its sources.

Bradford and Mortons account of the Plymouth Church is rather devoid of dates, but there aren't any other Samuel Hicks in Plymouth (that I know of) and it might explain the move from Plymouth to Dartmouth circa 1650. There was another Samuel in Dorchester m. 1665 (according to Savage) See this also
