His mother died when he was young, so he was raised by his father's second wife. He had one daughter with Hallye Cathrain Howlett in 1917. He died on September 25, 1966, in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, at the age of 77, and was buried at Hebron Cemetery and Mausoleums in Brooks, Kentucky.
