Cleaves Howard Hewlett was born in 1881 in Kingston, Frontenac, Ontario, Canada. He was the son of Charles Howard Hewlett (of Gloucestershire, England, United Kingdom), and Mary Emily Stewart (of London, England, United Kingdom). Cleaves had two siblings: older sister Julia Emily Hewlett (born Quebec, Canada 1880), and younger brother Harold Frederick Hewlett (born 1887 Ottawa, Ontario, Canada).
Sadly, his father passed away in January 1890 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada at 40 yrs. old. Cleaves' mother Emily then married Walter Frazer Hunter (of Ontario, Canada) in Sept. 1890 in Victoria. In 1891 they were living near Nanaimo British Columbia. His stepfather Walter was working in the mines as a laborer.[1] They then had three more children; all born in Wellington, Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada.[2]

In 1911 Cleaves was 30 yrs. old and was living with his widowed mother Emily and younger brother Harold and three step-siblings in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. He worked for the railroad, and Harold was an accountant.[3]
In 1921 Cleaves was now 40 yrs. old and was living with the same family group in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He was working as a foreman for the railroad.[4]
Before 1924 Cleaves was living in Vancouver British Columbia, Canada on Stephens St. His mother Emily was also living in Vancouver, on 12th Ave. West . An immigration report for a day trip to Bellingham Wash. USA describes Cleaves as 5'10", 160 lbs., dark complexion, black hair, brown eyes and Eng./Scotch. He occasionally went on short trips on the west coast. Cleaves worked for CPR and was a Yard Foreman.[5]
In 1924 Cleaves married Laurene Dade McLeod at Mt. Pleasant Methodist parsonage in Vancouver, British Columbia. His faith was Church of England and he was a bachelor.[6]
In the 1931 census Cleave Howard Hewlett (age 49), Yard Master, was living with his wife Laurene Day (age 40) in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.[7]
Cleaves' mother Mary Emily Hunter passed away in 1941 at 83 yrs. of age in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
His wife Dade passed away in 1952 in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada about 61 yrs. old. A few months before, their residence was 70 Mile House, British Columbia, Canada.[8]
Cleaves passed away in 1958 in Carlsbad Private Hospital in Vancouver at the age of 76 years; a widow. He had been living on Joffre Avenue in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada for the last two months. His main occupation was General Yardmaster for Canadian Pacific Railway; he had retired in 1945. Cleaves was cremated and buried in Mountain View Cemetery, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.[9][10] They had no children.
