Archibald was born 1 August 1867 at Gortgallen, County Roscommon, Ireland. He was the seventh son of John Hewitt and [[Johnston-30361|Mary Johnston].[1]

He came to New Zealand in 1888, settling at Robinsons Bay to farm. [2] On 16 November 1905 at her parents' residence, Langcliffe, Robinsons Bay, he married Miss Alice Sarah Duxbury.[3]

Archie passed away 6 September 1935 age 68. He was survived by widow; three sons Edward, Jack and Geoffrey (Robinson's Bay); and daughters Maisie and Joyce Hewitt (Christchurch) and Gwen and Ngaire Hewitt (Robinson's Bay). [4] [2] [5]

Research Notes

The obituary calls him the youngest son of "Robert" Hewitt, Roscommon. We also saw this dichotomy on his sister Julia, who was of Longford on marriage, but whose father was of Roscommon on death. Presuming him to be the brother of Sarah and William due to these common details and location at Akaroa.
