Illawarra Mercury 21-8-1866. Page 3. Shocking Attempted Murder & Suicide At Bathurst. On Monday eve great excitement was caused in the town by a report that Mr Thomas Higgins, Inn keeper, made an attempt to murder his brother in law, Mr Hetherington , by shooting him through the neck, and that he afterwards shot himself in the side. Higgins inflicted a mortal wound upon himself but Hetherington is quite well, although the ball passed through his neck, entering just under the chin and escaping at the back of the neck. Mr Higgins who was an old resident of the town had for some years been residing in Victoria, Orange Road, but recently came back to reside in Bathurst again, and taken public house. "Morning Stat Inn "George street.Mrs Higgins is left with a large family to mourn. Christopher Hetherington deposed - I am a farmer and reside at Emu Swamp, the body just viewed is my brother in law, I came to Bathurst on Saturday last and have been staying at the Higgins's since then. Yesterday I came into the house with my nephew, Thomas Higgins intending to start for home. Just as I got to the bar , I met the de eased and shook hands it's him and bade goodbye. Immediately after I let go of his hand I felt something push against the side of my face and heard the deport of a piece but did not see any piece. I ran to the front door, I put my hand on my throat and found I was bleeding. Idid not know I was wounded before that.I then ran to Doctor Macahatties.I was told by a stranger that Higgins had shot himself and I went into the room and saw his body. I have been acquainted with the deceased for over 20 years. Richard Machattie - Medical practitioner. He was frequently subject to violent passions and had a tendency to inflict injury upon those near, especially upon his wife. On two or three occasions a gun had been taken from him to prevent violence. On one occasion the police took a knife of him, with which he was attempting to cut his throat.I have frequently attended him for mad fits and have recommended he should be sent to Tarbon Creek, as I believed he was a dangerous man. On the last occasion he was sentenced to six months imprisonment in Bathurst goal.Iam award there is some insanity in the family and one sister is at present confined at Tarban Creek, for the last three years.

Daily Telegraph Sydney 28-5-1897. P5. Orange - Tuesday - Christopher Heatherington Age 70,Selector, Emu Swamp, was suffocated today while having dinner at Brightman's Hotel.He was seated at the table and was seen to be apparently choking,those present went to his assistance and sent for the doctor.Dr Bray arrived a few minutes later and found life extinct. On making an incision in the throat, he found a piece of meat about one inch square tightly embedded in the windpipe.
