Stephen was born in 1859 to John Henley and Matilda Leppard. Stephen's birth was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1859 in the Steyning district[1] and his mother's maiden name was: Leppard.[2] According to the 1861 Census, he was born in Portslade, in the Steyning District of Sussex.
In the 1861 census Stephen (age 2) was the son of John Henley in Lewisham, Kent, England.[3]

Stephen (age 25), son of John Henley, married Edith Hart on 2 June 1884 in Oxford, St Philip and St James, Oxfordshire, England.[4] They were the parents of Edith Matilda, Annie Elizabeth, Charles Stephen, George Augustus, Joseph Reginald, and Clarice Gwendolyne Henley
The family immigrated to Canada in 1913, according to Census documents. [5]
In 1921, Edith and Stephen lived at 1064 Comox St., in Vancouver, British Columbia, as per the Census. Also in the household were Edith Matilda, Clarice G., and Lilly Woodman, a lodger.
Stephen (79) died in Vancouver, British Columbia on 29 May 1929[6] and was buried at Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, BC.
I don't actually know when Stephen was born. I've seen it range from 1850 (possible death reg), to 1858 (headstone) to 1870. Since the first child was born in 1885, I'm guessing it would be prior to 1865. Free BMD shows he was born in the 1st quarter of 1859.
At time of marriage 2 June 1884, Stephen shows a profession of Chemist & Druggist, residing in Stepney. He was the son of John Henley, Corn Dealer.
Edith lived on Woodstock Road, daughter of Charles Hart (deceased), and her father was a harness maker.
1911 Census says he is 52, which would put birthdate to 1858 or 1859.
1913 Passenger List shows Stephen, wife Edith, and children Edith Matilda and Clarice Gwendoline. Stephen is listed as a Corn Dealer, Edith as a Housewife, and young Edith as a Stenographer. They are headed for Calgary, Alberta, and belong to the religious denomination of Society of Friends (Quaker).
His BC Death Reg. shows he died in 1929 (in agreement with headstone), but that he was 79, making his birth in 1850 or 1851. That is the only BC Death Reg. for a Stephen Henley found between 1820 and 1850, but there is no image available for it.
