Biography

Martha S. Henbest was born on 17 January 1858 in Marshall, Clark County, Illinois, United States. She was the daughter of John Albert Henbest and Octavia Mathews.[1] She was enumerated during the 1860 census with her parents and siblings, living in Anderson Township, Clark County, Illinois.[2]

After the Civil War ended, the family moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas. Two years later they moved to the Pasville community four miles south of Cassville, Missouri, where she lived the rest of her life.[3] She was enumerated in her brother's household in 1870 with other siblings, in Flat Creek Township, Barry County, Missouri. It's unknown why their parents were not present with them in this census.[4] By 1880 her parents were again at the head of their household in Flat Creek.[5]

Martha married Clay Stubblefield on 1 June 1884 in Cassville, Barry County, Missouri, before a Justice of the Peace.[6][7] They had eight children:

  6. Emma Octavia Stubblefield (1894 - 1985)[14]
  7. Leona L. Stubblefield (1898 - 1969)[15]
  8. Albert Newton Stubblefield (1901 - 1968)

Martha and Clay and their children were enumerated on a farm during the 1900 through 1920 censuses in Flat Creek Township.[16][17][18] Martha was widowed in 1928.[19] She was enumerated in 1930 with only her youngest son Albert living in the household.[20]

Martha died at age 74 on 14 January 1933 in Flat Creek Township,[1][3] and was buried the next day at Corinth Cemetery in Cassville.[21]
