Connection Counts for Notable Profiles

All WikiTree members have a "CC7", i.e. a Connection Count within Seven Degrees. It's a handy way to measure how well someone is connected on our global family tree. A low CC7 generally means that a person is missing a lot of ancestors and relatives.

We now calculate CC7s for "notables" as well as members. A notable is defined as the profile of a person who meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability and is identified with the Notables Project Box or Notables Profile Sticker.[1] For fun, see the notables with the highest CC7s.

A person's CC7 appears near the top of their profile, below their name. Please note that changes to connection counts and connected status can take up to 24 hours to update. When you add connections, the number does not immediately go up.

Help Grow Notable Connections

Please help us grow the CC7s of notables!

Notable profiles showcase our single family tree. While every ancestor and cousin on our tree is worthy of attention, profiles of notables naturally get more traffic. Millions of people find these profiles through Google, social media, and links on other websites.

When these profiles look good, WikiTree looks good. When people like them, they are more likely to participate in our community and tell their friends about it. This helps all our ancestor profiles. Moreover, well-connected notables dramatize how closely everyone is related on our shared family tree. As WikiTreers know, it's a small world, and we're all cousins.

You can help by simply adding missing relatives to a notable, in any direction. If you want to encourage other people to join you or ask for help, post on G2G using the tag notables. If you're more serious, you could start a little free-space project for a category of notables. There is also a top-level Notables Project you could join. But don't let organizing or collaborating with a project slow you down; you can get started right away adding connections. Thank you!

Living Notables

Most notables profiles are Open and if you're a signer of the Honor Code you can immediately start adding relatives. Profiles of living notables are more tightly controlled for privacy reasons. See Help:Living_Notables for the policy.

To help with these profiles, you may just need to contact the project managing the profile and ask for help identifying Open profiles of relatives.

Unconnected Notables

Some profiles are not connected to the rest of us on the "big tree." See Help:Unconnected for more about what this means.

You can identify an Unconnected Notable because it will say this under their name, rather than Notable Connection.

Unconnected notables really need your help. It doesn't reflect well on WikiTree when a significant notable doesn't have good connections. You'll be doing our whole community a service by helping.

  1. Identification of Notables: Technically, a profile will have its CC7 calculated and displayed if it has either {{Notables}} or {{Notables Sticker}} in its biography and it has one or more connections. If the profile has no connections, it will not be displayed. Note that newly-identified notables will not instantly have a CC7. These are recalculated offline. It may take up to 24 hours for a count to be displayed or updated.
