Surname

The family's surname is spelt variously Held, Helt, Helth, Heldt across different documents; Heldt seems to have been the choice for most descendants by the late 1800s.

1800 — Baptism of daughter Elizabeth Health

1st November 1800, Elizabeth daughter of Henry Health was baptised at St Mary's, Fort St George, Madras^[1][2]

1801 — Birth of son Alexius Held

"Fort St George—This is to certify that Alexius, son of Henry Held, piper in HM Reg de Meuron and of Maria Magdalena a native born the 25th of December 1801 was baptised... this day 20th January 1806..."^[3][4]

1806 — Marriage to Maria Magdalena

Fort St George, 29th of January 1806. "This is to certify that Hendrick Held Drummer in the Regt de Meuron and Maria Magdalena native spinster were united in holy matrimony..."^[5]Witnesses: Joseph Bertie, Drum Major, Regt de Meuron; Elizabeth Bertie; ? Bouter, Drum ? in the Fort Band Fort St George; Isabella Bouter.

Hendrick was in the Regiment de Meuron^[6][7], which was, acording to an article mentioning it's history in The Englishman 17 December 1903^[8], "In 1806 the Regiment was ordered home, and was stationed suscessively at the Isle of Wight; Lymington and Gurnsey." Gibraltar, Messina and Canada followed before disbandment in 1816. Perhaps the regiments imminent departure spurred their marriage and the baptism of Alexius. No other records relating to them have been found so far, so we cannot ascertain wheter they left India with the regiment or part of the family remained.

Hendrick Helt, a Swiss solider, buried in Calcutta in 1753.^[10] Perhaps a grandfather??

Have estimated birth year of 1780 as have to put something in. There is a family search profile with a date on 1782^[11], but not source provided for the date. There are also parents attached, Hendrick Held (1756-) and Held(1751-) but, again, no sources. Perhaps someone will find this profile and add the info they have.
