My mother used to tell me about her Heldt relatives. One of them made pretzels. I was uncertain who this was, thinking it was August's son, Henry. Then I heard about the book, Allentown: The Story of a Pittsburgh Neighborhood (Allentown Civic Association, 1990), and got it through interlibrary loan. In a section on memorable community members from the early days of the neighborhood (late 19th century), I found:

"Other notable Germans in this budding community were August Heldt, a baker famous for his Old World pretzels and apple strudel; . . . " (p12)
