Notes

Note NI497Johann Nepomuc Haisler was a shoemaker and farmer from Westerstetten, Germany. They have fourteen children and four of them came to America. FOUR BROTHERS COME TO AMERICA FROM WESTERSTETTEN GERMANY According to church records in Westerstetten, Nicholas, Johann, Augustin, and Anton came to America around 1850. They brought with them a spirit of adventure, family values, Catholic heritage, and a love of farming. It is possible that Anton came by himself after his brothers - his passport is dated March 14, 1850. Although we do not have their individual stories, ocean voyages in those years were often filled with danger, death, and struggle. People on the ships lived in small quarters, storms developed at sea, and sometimes food and water had to be rationed. Cholera epidemics would occur because of sanitation problems aboard the ships. The voyages often lasted more than thirty days. A quote from a letter to Rosalyn (Heisler) Landwehr from her sister Lucille (Heisler) Johnson dated October 30, 1978 reads, "I remember papa (Thomas Heisler) telling us about his father and two brothers coming over from Germany. They all had to be under twenty-one, because they left Germany to avoid military service. When they arrived in New York, one of the brothers became separated and vanished. The others (Papa's father and his brother) were hustled on a train and sent to Missouri. Papa said they did not know where they were going and you wonder how they ever landed in St. Thomas." Thomas Barton checked census records and the earliest show that in 1850 Johann Heisler had a farm and his brothers, Augustin Heisler and Anton Heisler, lived with him. There is no mention of his other brother, Nicholas Heisler. We have very little information on Augustin and Anton; no information has been found on Nicholas. If anyone has information on where any of the brothers were buried, please let me know. According to Eugene Heisler's book on "Westerstetten", the family home Hauptstrasse 19 was built in 1757. Johann Nepomuc and Barbara Haisler moved in the house in 1806. It is still in the Heisler Family today.
