THE FATAL TRAMCAR ACCIDENT ON THE HESSLE-ROAD
A coronor;s inquiry into the circumstances attending the death of Kate Hebden, five years of age, who was knocked down by a tramcar on the Hessle-road and killed, was held yesterday afternoon before Mr A. Thorney.--Arthur Hebden, beer-seller, Marmaduke Inn, Marmaduke-stret, father of the girl, said that the child was a very intelligent one, and of good sight. She was on the Hessle-road on an errand. She had frequently been sent errands, and he and his wife had both cautioned her about being careful when crossing the road.--George Emmerson, tram driver, in the employ of the Hull Steam Tramway Company, said that he was driving No. 22 car along the Hessle-road towards Dairycoates, and when opposite Marmaduke-street end saw a rully proceeding at a walking pace towards the town, nearer the kerb than the tram lines. The deceased ran from behind the rully, straight in front of his horses. She was knocked down by the off fore-leg of the off side horse, and trod upon by the hind leg. He put the brake on and stopped the car as quickly as possible, but the fore wheel had passed over her face, and the hind wheel just rested on her neck. He would be driving about four or five miles an hour. He had the horses thoroughly under his control, and stopped the car in about six yards. He had rung his bell a few minutes before, and did not see the girl until she ran from behind the rully into his horses.--The evidence of Mr Allison and Mr Vollins, witnesses of the accident, was also taken and the jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death" attaching no blame to the driver of the car, who appeared to have had the horsese thoroughly under his command.
FATAL TRAMWAY ACCIDENT IN HULL. Shortly before five o’clock on Tuesday evening, Kate Hebden, five years of age, daughter of Arthur and Emma Hebden, of the Marmaduke Arms, Marmaduke Street, was run over on the Hessle Road, by the tram No. 23, and killed instantly. The car was proceeding from the town, and the poor child running from behind a rully was knocked down, and the off-side front wheel of the car passed over her body. She was taken to an adjoining shop, but, on the arrival of medical assistance, life was extinct.
