Biography

US Black Heritage Project
John Hazard is a part of US Black heritage.

John Hazard was born about 1872 in Vermont. Both of his parents were also born in Vermont. He was the son of Sarah Talbot and Civil War veteran James Hazzard of the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.

In 1880, he was attending school, probably in or near Woodstock, Vermont.

Research Notes

  • The attached sources assume that this John was the biological child of Lucy A. Hazard and Moses D. Todd. If this is the case, then there are 1930, 1940, and 1950 U.S. Census records too.
  • John was possibly the son of James Hazzard's niece Lucy A. Hazard (1851-) and Moses D. Todd (no information found).[1]
  • Lucy Hazzard died in 1878.
  • It is also possible that James M Hazzard (abt.1831-1890) and Sarah (Talbot) Hazard (abt.1834-1871) had a child named John in May of 1912. Sarah may have died from "child birth fever." Her death record might say "puerperal fever." which would indicate that she had just had a baby. The 1880 U.S. Census record certainly indicates that John was the son of James.
  • A record for a second John Hazzard born between 1870 and 1871 in Woodstock, Vermont has not been found. The one John of record has a birth record with mother Lucy Hazard and father Moses D Todd. He also has a marriage record with mother Lucy Hazard and father Austin Hazard.
