Biography

According to his Civil War Pension records in the Natl Archives, John G. Hayzlett (son of Andrew) was born in 1830 in Wheeling, VA(WV) and married in Hancock Co, IN in 1851 to Elinore Hatfield. He lists their children and their birth dates in his pension application, dated Jan 15, 1898. There may have been others who died before 1898. His daughters were listed by their married names. 4 daughters and 3 sons.

Based on land deeds in Linn Co, IA, John bought land in Linn Co from his uncle William in Nov, 1853. John and Eleanor were still living in Hancock Co, IN at that time as their first child was only an infant. They are also listed in the 1860 and 70 census records for Linn Co. John served in the Civil War in 1862-63 his pension listing him as 1st Lt. Co F, 24th Regt IA Volunteer Infantry.

The 1870 Linn Co, Marion Twp census confirms the names of his children as listed in the pension and shows John at age 40 as the sheriff of the county. According to his pension records, Eleanor, his wife, died on 29 Sept 1873 but I don’t know where they were living at the time. He remarried a widow, Jennie Wallace, on 2 May 1876 in Independence, IA.
