John was born in about 1776. He was the son of Samuel Hayward and Elizabeth. His date of birth is confirmed by his age of 72 when he died in 1849.

John, son of Saml & Eliz, was baptised on 2 October 1776 in St Nicholas, Cole Abbey, City of London, London, England.[1]

In 1806 he dissolved a business partnership

William Powell and John Pearson Hayward, of Newgate Street, London herald, sign, house painters and gi'ders January 1st 1806 [2]

He is named in his fathers will, signed on 6th July 1824 and proved on 11th May 1826 and appointed as one of the executors, receiving a share of the estate, alongside his mother and surviving siblings [3]


In 1840 he was re-elected as a common councilman for the coming year in the ward of Farringdon within. [4]


In 1844 John chaired the meeting of the City of London General Pension Society, as the newspaper announcement stated

City of London General Pension Society. — Monday the annual general meeting of the supporters of the above society, founded for providing permanent relief for decayed artisans, mechanics, manufacturers, trades- men, and the widows of such persons, was held at the offices in Coleman street, City. The chair was taken by John Pearson Hayward, Esq. [5]

On 19 September 1846 a woman was in court for breaking a square of glass at the office of John Pearson Hayward at 88 Newgate Street. John was in his counting house between six and seven in the morning and he heard the smash. The woman who broke the window was homeless and wanted food and somewhere to sleep. She was sent to prison for a month, but asked for longer. [6]


He died in 1849

Aug. 26, aged 72, John Pearson Hayward Esq., Deputy of the Ward of Farrington-Within [7]

Research notes

The Illustrated London News on Saturday 02 February 1850 reported that the City of London Pension Society held a meeting of the life subscribers. A number of changes to the running of the Society were agreed with Mr George Hayward (who was appointed to act in the place of his deceased father, Mr John Pearson Hayward) was appointed as one of the Trustees to the Society's permanent fund. [8]
