Projects

DuPage Co., Illinois

I created the DuPage Co., Illinois [1] page in February 2023 to help bring DuPage County, Illinois researchers together, help with categorization, and improve collaboration.

Hayes Name Study

I became a member of the Hayes Name Study [2] in 2023 and am researching Henry Hays (1808-1888) and William Hayes (1817 - 1895) lines. I created a research page for Henry to try to discover his parents [3].

Hello Julie,

We are happy you came back to the Northwest Terriers for April's Connect-a-thon. As of this writing, you have contributed 90 profiles. Join us on the Discord channel or the G2G Team Chat page for any questions, comments, or just for fun chatting.

Remember, you must have at least one valid source for each profile you create. The source is the identification of where you obtained information. A family tree is not a source.

See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Sources for the methods used for sourcing if needed.

Scoring results can be found here.

Thanks for your help!!

Greetings Poland Project member! Thank you for your interest in the Poland Project. We have new information and updates:
  • The Poland Project is a collaborative environment for others to preserve their family history. For the last several months, the Poland Project has been undergoing new organization with new volunteers. We are excited about how the project can enhance Wikitree!
  • We have several different task teams that need volunteers. Please take a look at this page to see which one interests you: Volunteer Tasks. Once you have decided which task team you would like to work on, please reply to this comment.
  • The only requirements for ongoing membership in the Poland Project are that you join a team, work with your Team Leader, respond to the periodic check-ins from the Project Leaders/Coordinators and help the Project satisfy its goals. We recognize that people lead busy lives and are grateful for any and all contributions you can make.
  • Once you have joined a team, please join the Poland Project Google Group to receive project updates and participate in project and team discussions.
  • If we don’t hear from you in the next 45 days, your membership badge will be removed. In this case please don't be offended as you're welcome to rejoin at any time. Please also note, that in order to receive help researching your Polish ancestors, membership is not mandatory. Just ask your questions in the G2G forum and tag them with Poland_Europe or Polska in order for our knowledgeable researchers to see them.

Hi Skye - Thank you for the update about the Poland Project and the link to the Volunteer Tasks. My interest in the project is from the POV of an American whose maternal great-grandparents immigrated from Poland between 1902-1908. Because I have beginner-level Polish language and research skills, I'm not sure which Project may be the best fit. If there is a need for research assistance in United States based records, that may be a better fit, especially Chicago area. I understand if this isn't a fit for the Project at this time, I'll still follow the tag and G2G conversations. ~ Julie

Hi Julie! For now I think a good fit for you would be within the "Database Errors" group. This is very easy to do for a beginner of Poland, as it sort of introduces you to a broad range of profiles. There are different levels of errors, from easy to difficult ... your choice and we can use all the help we can get! Please leave a comment and let me know this is okay.

Do you need assistance on researching your Polish lines? We've revamped the Poland Resource Library. Please take a look! https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Poland/Resource_Library. If you'd like me to take a peek at your Polish lines, send me a link/Wiki ID and make sure the privacy settings are open. :)

Hi Skye - Thank you for the project suggestion. I look forward to learning more and contributing to the project. I'll follow up with Maggie if I have questions about the team.

Thank you, also, for the offer to look at my Polish lines. I would be interested in your suggestions on one of the families. Let me write up what I have and check the privacy settings. I'll contact you through your page.

Hi Julie, Thank you for improving profiles of Black notables in July. I noticed you added some of those sourced profiles to our challenge tracker in July. I wanted to make sure you knew that the USBH Connecting Challenge is only for newly created family profiles, rather than adding sources to existing ones. You can read the rules for the challenge here: www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:US_Black_Heritage:_Connecting_Challenge

Thanks, Emma

Hi Julie!

Thank you so much for volunteering to be a part of the Black Heritage Project!

There are two things I need you to do. One is to please pick a team you would like to be active in. The current teams are: 1) US Black Heritage Profile Improvement Teams Creating, categorizing, writing biographies, connecting, sourcing, adding stickers. 2) US Black Heritage Topical Teams Focusing on the people of historical events, notables, and various topics of interest from the history of the African American community. 3) US Black Heritage Slavery Teams Focusing on various aspects of identifying descendants of enslaved people and connecting members to their ancestors. 4) US Black Heritage Documentation Teams Creating and maintaining project help pages.

You are welcome to join as many teams as you wish and change teams at any time.

I would also ask that you join us in our Google Discussion Group so we can have your input on important topics and so we can collaborate on profiles and projects. You either need a Gmail address or access to a Google account to access the group. Please let me know which email address you would like me to use to add you.

I look forward to collaborating with you to meet the goals of our project.

How do I join one of the teams? I was thinking about the US Black Heritage Topical Team because I have a copy of African-American Business Leaders: A Biographical Dictionary by John N. Ingham and Lynne B. Feldman from 1994. I wanted to use that as a staring point to add new profiles and develop existing profiles for the US Black_Heritage project.

For the Google Discussion Group, you can use genealogy68 @ gmail.

Hello, Julie!

Thanks for the work you accomplished during our Connect-A-Thon 2020. It is amazing how many more profiles were created and added to our Shared Tree over the weekend. I hope you’ll join us for the Source-a-thon this fall.

Hi Julie,

Thanks for having a big heart and adopting the Orphaned Profiles. This After Adopting Orphans FAQ explains the special attention adopted profiles will sometimes need.

Let me know if you have any questions on how to find and record sources, merge duplicates, clean up gedcom biographies, and interpret the Suggestions report. I'm here to help!

Hi!

Now that you have had a little time to try WikiTree, there are a few more features you may find useful.

Ideas on what to include in a profile can be found in Styles and Standards, including some tips on writing biographies.

If you need to describe an event, an heirloom or a location relevant to your research, you may like to learn about Free Space Profiles.

Lastly, sometimes you'll run into unresponsive profile managers. We have a process for resolving those unfortunate situations.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask via my profile page.

Shirley Dalton, WikiTree Mentor

Hi Julie,

Welcome to WikiTree. By now you should have received an email with helpful links to get you started on adding your family to ours. WikiTree is different because our goal is to have one profile per person and that means we share ancestors and work together as a BIG collaborative team! What brings you to WikiTree? Do you have research you’d like to share? Are you interested in how your family fits into the big tree? When you confirm your email address, you’ll be given an opportunity to volunteer to help document our collective family history. Use the Tags and comments to tell us about your genealogical interests. When you volunteer, one of our Greeters will be happy to confirm your membership. Enjoy the experience,
