Edward was born in Maitland, NSW, in 1854. He was the son of John Haynes and Margaret Daley. He was a doctor, and for a while was the Government Medical Officer in Gunnedah, where he became Mayor briefly in 1891. Edward passed away in 1910.
The Late Dr. Haynes.
Thus a West Australian paper on the late Dr. Edward Haynes, formerly of Sydney;— Perth loses a clever surgeon, a good citizen, and a beloved man in the death of Dr. E. J. A. Haynes. Always energetic and enthusiastic in his work, it may be said of Dr. Haynes that he died in harness, for he followed his profession, despite ill-health, up till a few weeks ago. He will be keenly missed, and by none more than the poor, for with them he had the greatest sympathy and gave freely and with reward of his great knowledge and skill. If ever a man did good by stealth that man was Dr. Haynes, and there exist in the State to-day scores of persons who can testify by personal experience to the kindliness and generosity of the deceased surgeon. Within a few days of his his 56th birth day the good-hearted New South Welshman has passed away, leaving a void that will scarcely be filled by his like. Born in Maitland (N.S.W.) he was educated in the mother State, taking his medical degrees in London in 1886. Returning in the following year to his native State, he was appointed Government doctor at Gunnedah, of which place he also became Mayor. He came to West Australia in 1890. Ten years later he took a trip to the old country, where he received several fellowships. But it was not only in his profession that Dr. Haynes won a high reputation. He took a prominent part in public life, in military and municipal work. A hater of shams, and addicted to plain speech, he uttered the truth, as it appeared to him, without fear or equivocation. This trait sometimes brought him into conflict with the persons or institutions he criticised, but the effect was usually salutary, and he never lacked the sympathy of the public. In all he said and did he had the public weal at heart, and the community, knowing this, valued his services accordingly. Despite strong opposition, he established, a few years ago, the W.A. Trained Nurses' Association, and lived to see it an unqualified success. As testifying to the esteem and affection in which he was held, and to the recognition that was accorded his talents and achievements, it may be mentioned that his funeral occasioned one of the largest and most representative gatherings of that nature that has been seen in Perth for many years. It was attended by three Ministers of the Crown (including the Premier), a number of members of Parliament, the Mayors of Perth, Subiaco, and Leederville, the Principal Medical Officer, prominent members of the medical profession, leading representatives of different religious denominations, and many members of other professions. The deceased gentleman leaves a widow, two sons (Dr. Arthur Haynes and Mr. Ray Haynes), and four daughters.
Dr. Haynes is also reputedly responsible for digging up the burial site of the warrior "Cumbo Gunnerah"[1]
