RNLI Gold Medal - 14 December 1901
James was awarded the Gold Medal by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) on the 14 December 1901.[11]
Hallett James (Senior), Launcher, formerly Assistant Coxswain, Caister Lifeboat – Awarded RNLI Gold Medal – 14 December 1901 - On the 13-14 November 1901: When the Caister No. 2 Norfolk and Suffolk class lifeboat 'Beauchamp' was launched to a casualty on the Barber Sands, Mr. Haylett was one of the helpers even though he was 78 years old. The launch took several hours due to the horrendous conditions, but eventually the boat succeeded in getting through the breakers. Three-quarters of an hour later, when cries were heard coming from the shoreline, Mr. Haylett went to the area and found the lifeboat upside down. With his grandson, he dashed into the water and brought three men to safety. One of the survivors was also a grandson and another a son-in-law, but he lost two sons in the incident. Altogether, he was on the beach for 12 hours in bitter cold weather, wet through and without food.[12]He had served the lifeboats for 50 years and helped save hundreds of lives.
RNLI Gold Medal.
On 6 January 1902, King Edward VII , Patron of the RNLI , with the Prince of Wales, President, presented the gold medal to James Haylett at Sandringham. During the Board of Trade enquiry into the disaster when asked if the lifeboat had abandoned the search for the casualty, Haylett replied: 'Caister Lifeboatmen never turn back'.
